Before any cables come out
Confirm the symptom actually points to the battery: clicking or silence when turning the key, dim dash lights, or everything dead. If the engine cranks strongly but will not fire, the battery is not your problem. Park the donor car close without the vehicles touching, set both parking brakes, turn both ignitions off, and switch off lights and accessories.
Put on eye protection if you have it, and inspect the dead battery first. A cracked, leaking, or bulging battery, or one that smells of rotten eggs, should not be jumped; call for service instead. Batteries can vent hydrogen gas, which is why sparks near the battery are the thing every step below avoids.
The connection order that keeps sparks away
Clamp red to the dead battery’s positive terminal, marked with a plus. Clamp the other red to the donor battery’s positive. Clamp black to the donor battery’s negative terminal. Finally, clamp the last black to bare, unpainted metal on the dead car’s engine block or a designated ground point, well away from the battery itself.

That last placement is the safety heart of the procedure: any small spark at the final connection happens away from the battery’s vent gases. Keep cables clear of belts and fans, and never let the clamps touch each other while connected.
Starting, and disconnecting in reverse
Start the donor car and let it idle for two to three minutes. Then start the dead car. If it fails, wait a couple of minutes and try again; if several attempts fail, stop and arrange service rather than cooking the starter.
Once running, disconnect in exact reverse order: ground clamp first, then donor negative, then donor positive, then dead positive. Drive the revived car for a good twenty to thirty minutes to put charge back into the battery, ideally at road speed rather than idling in the driveway.
Jump packs, and what the dead battery is telling you
Portable lithium jump packs make the process simpler and remove the second car entirely: connect red to positive, black to the ground point, power on, and start. They belong in every trunk, checked and recharged a few times a year, especially before winter.
One jump after leaving the lights on is an accident. A battery that needs jumping repeatedly is finished or the charging system is failing; most parts stores test batteries and alternators free. Batteries in most climates live roughly three to five years, and replacing one on your schedule always beats replacing it in a parking garage at night.
