What Answerunboxed is

Answerunboxed is an independent consumer guide for readers in the United States. We cover the decisions most people face a handful of times in their lives and are never taught how to handle: choosing a retirement account, reading a blood test result, deciding whether an extended car warranty is worth the money, working out whether solar panels pay for themselves.

The premise is simple. Most of these questions have a findable answer, but it is usually buried in a government publication, an insurer rate filing or a clinical guideline written for professionals. Our job is to read those sources and give you the answer in plain English, with a link back to where it came from so you can check us.

What we cover

Seven areas: money and investing, insurance, health and wellness, home improvement, auto, technology, and careers. We write about the ordinary version of each problem rather than the edge cases, because the ordinary version is what most readers actually have.

How our articles are made

Every article starts from primary sources. For money and tax questions that means IRS publications and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. For insurance, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and state regulator filings. For health, the CDC, the National Institutes of Health and the relevant specialty body. For consumer protection, the Federal Trade Commission.

Drafts are produced with AI assistance and then checked, corrected and edited by a person before publication. We tell you this because you deserve to know how what you are reading was made. What we do not do is present that process as something it is not: there is no panel of named experts behind this site, and you will not find invented credentials on it.

What we are not

We are not licensed financial advisers, insurance agents, tax professionals or medical practitioners, and nothing on this site is personalised advice for your circumstances. We can tell you how a Roth IRA works and what the contribution limits are. We cannot tell you whether you personally should open one. For decisions with real money or real health consequences attached, speak to someone licensed who knows your situation.

Independence

We make money from advertising. Advertisers have no input into what we write, which products we mention, or how we assess them. See How we make money for the detail.

Getting in touch

Corrections, questions and criticism are all welcome through our contact form. We read everything, and we publish corrections rather than quietly editing mistakes away.
